  • Description

The students of Addis Ababa's university sat around the campus on Tuesday and refused again to attend classes. They had been boycotting classes for days in protest against the country's new Government. The Government, headed by aristocrat Endalkachew Mckonnen, was appointed by Emperor Haile Selassie in a move to placate the armed forces, which had staged a virtual uprising in support of demands for higher wages and the downfall of the ten-year-old Government.

The armed forced are now back in their barracks but the reforms came too late to stop an upsurge of civil unrest following massive inflation in recent months. As the students gathered to protest, the Ethiopian Labour Unions called for a general strike on Thursday to demand a substantial increase in wages.
