Background: Athletics... and Steve Ovett, Britain's European 1500 metres champion, was an easy winner of the much publicised Golden Mile in Tokyo on Monday (25 September). It had been hoped that the race, the highlight of an eight -nation meeting, would be won in a new world record, but Ovett's time of three minute 55 point five was well outside the world best mark of four 49 point four, set by New Zealand's John Walker three years ago.

SYNOPSIS: Even though the field included triple world record holder, Henry Rono of Kenya, Ovett started a strong favourite.

With only half a lap gone, Rono stormed into the lead, but then with only two laps completed a gladular complaint forced him out.

It was a typical Ovett victory. He stayed with the pack until 300 metres out, and then sprinted away to finish ahead of Francis Gonzalez of France, and another Briton, Graham Williamson.

For his efforts Ovett received an 18-carat gold trophy worth 9,500 US dollars.
