  • Description

The Anglo-American peace initiative on Rhodesia received a severe setback at the weekend when guerrilla leaders rejected key elements of the settlement plan and described a multi-party system for the country as a luxury. United States Secretary of State Cyrus Vance and British Foreign Secretary David Owen had held tow days of talks in the Tanzanian capital of Dar-es-Salaam with Patriotic Front leaders Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe trying to persuade them to accept the proposals. Their rejection could, as BBC reporter John Simpson points out, now complicate the issue even further.
