    PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND POPE JOHN RECEIVED POSTHUMOUS PRESIDENTIAL MEDALS OF FREEDOM ON FRIDAY AT THE WHITE HOUSE. PRESIDENT JOHNSON MADE THE REPRESENTATIONS.

    THE MEDAL IS THE NATION'S HIGHEST CIVILIAN AWARD. PRESIDENT KENNEDY, DESIGNED THE PRESENT MEDAL, AND ANNOUNCED LAST JANUARY THAT IT WOULD BE PRESENTED ANNUALLY - TO AMERICANS AND FOREIGNERS FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICES IN PEACE TIME.

    PRESIDENT KENNEDY'S MEDAL WAS ACCEPTED BY HIS BROTHER, ROBERT, THE ATTORNEY GENERAL. BOTH PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND POPE JOHN WERE ADDED TO THE LIST BY PRESIDENT JOHNSON. THE OTHER RECIPIENTS WERE SELECTED BY MR. KENNEDY.

    AMONG THEM WERE JEAN MONNET OF FRANCE, PRESIDENT OF THE ACTION COMMITTEE FOR A UNITED STATES OF EUROPE AND A GUIDING FORCE BEHIND THE CREATION OF THE EUROPEAN COMMON MARKET; RALPH J. BUNCHE, THE AMERICAN UNDER SECRETARY OF THE U.N. FOR SPECIAL POLITICAL AFFAIRS; MARIAN ANDERSON, THE AMERICAN NEGRO SINGER; LUDWIG MIES VAN DER ROHE, NOW OF THE UNITED STATES, ARCHITECT; JOHN J. McCLOY, FORMER PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD BANK AND COMMISSIONER TO GERMANY; THORNTON WILDER, THE AMERICAN AUTHOR.
