    At the United Nations, an urgently convened session of the Security Council began on Monday (4 December) to discuss the situation in Namibia. The debate opened as the South African sponsored elections started in the territory. The Security Council, which has its own plans to supervise Namibian elections next year, has already declared the poll being taken now, as null and void. The African members of the Council opened the debate with a call for economic sanctions against South Africa. Madame Gwendoline Konie of Zambia, the President of the U.N. s' Namibia Council also represents SWAPO, whose supporters are boycotting the elections. She accused the South Africans of suppressing any real opposition before the voting began.
