Background: FRENCH WOMAN NOVELIST EDMONDE CHARLES-ROUX WAS TODAY (MONDAY) AWARDED THE PRIX GONCOURT, FRANCE'S TOP LITERARY PRIZE, FOR HER NOVEL "OUBLIER PALERME" ("TO FORGET PALERMO").

MISS CHARLES-ROUX IS THE DAUGHTER OF A FRENCH DIPLOMAT. SHE SPENT THE EARLY YEARS OF HER LIFE IN ROME AND HAS CLOSE ASSOCIATIONS WITH ITALY.

THE COVETED PRIZE WAS AWARDED TO MISS CHARLES-ROUX IN A SECOND BALLOT IN WHICH SHE NARROWLY DEFEATED 25-YEAR OLD CANADIAN WRITER REJEAN DUCHARME, AUTHOR OF THE NOVEL "L'AVALEE DES AVALES".

THE PRIX GONCOURT IS WORTH ONLY 50 FRANCS (GBP3.10 SHILLINGS STERLING), BUT SUCH IS ITS PRESTIGE THAT THE WINNING AUTHOR CAN BE CERTAIN OF A BEST-SELLER.

MISS CHARLES-ROUX CONTRASTS THE LATIN AND ANGLO-SAXON TEMPERAMENTS IN "OUBLIER PALERME" - THE STORY OF AN AMERICAN FASHION JOURNALIST WORKING IN NEW YORK WHO FALLS IN LOVE WITH A SICILIAN IMMIGRANT AND LATER RETURNS WITH HIM TO PALERMO ON HONEYMOON. IT IS HER FIRST NOVEL AND INCLUDES A PITILESS DESCRIPTION OF LIFE IN NEW YORK AS SEEN BY THE AUTHOR ON HER MANY VISITS THERE.

THE OTHER LEADING FRENCH LITERARY AWARD ANNOUNCED TODAY, THE PRIX RENAUDOT, WAS AWARDED TO 44-YEAR OLD JOSE CABANAIS FOR HIS NOVEL "LA BATAILJE DE TOULOUSE" ("THE BATTLE OF TOULOUSE"). THE PRIX RENAUDOT IS AWARDED BY JOURNALISTS COVERING THE GONCOURT AWARD.
