  • Description

Two South African boxers on Saturday (26 October) defeated their opponents-- from Scotland and the United States -- on points during a multinational contest.

Anthony Morodi fought Scotsman Jim Watt in a lightweight bout while Maxwell Malinga defeated Eddie Perkins from America. Both bouts were won on points decisions.

Watt is ranked sixth in the world and Morodi's victory was seen by some commentators as a magnificent display of boxing.

Others disagreed and watts himself was quoted as saying the felt he hadn't conceded more than four rounds to his opponent. It was a view shared by other South African sports writers.

In the welterweight bout between Malinga and Perkins the American looked like the well-practiced veteran he is -- this fight was his 100th professional bout.

His points defeat by Malinga suggests the South African is within striking distance of the World Welterweight title.

Visnews apologises that the front page 'Editorial Notes' and 'Commentary' omitted to mention that South African boxer Maxwell Malinga is a black South African, fighting in a multi-racial international tournament. It was the fourth such tournament this year under the Pretoria Government's recent polity changes relaxing apartheid in sport.
