    PRESIDENT JOHNSON YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) ANNOUNCED FEDERAL MEASURES TO PROTECT THE CIVIL RIGHTS MARCHERS IN ALABAMA. HE SPOKE ABOUT HIS DECISION DURING A PRESS CONFERENCE TELEVISED THROUGHOUT AMERICA FROM HIS RANCH IN TEXAS.

    THE PRESIDENT SAID: "OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL DAYS THE EYES OF THE NATION WILL BE UPON ALABAMA, AND THE EYES OF THE WORLD WILL BE UPON AMERICA."
    EARLIER THE PRESIDENT HAD SIGNED A PROCLAMATION FEDERALISING THE ALABAMA NATIONAL GUARD "BECAUSE THERE IS SUBSTANTIAL LIKELIHOOD THAT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE MAY OCCUR."
    HIS DECISION FOLLOWED GOVERNOR WALLACE'S DEMAND ON FRIDAY THAT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT PAY THE EXPENSES INVOLVED IN MUSTERING GUARDS TO LINE THE ROUTE FROM SELMA TO MONTGOMERY, THE ROUTE TO BE COVERED BY CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS TODAY (SUNDAY).
