  • Description

Strict security precautions were enforced at the Olympic village in Montreal, Canada, as the first athletes started to check in.

SYNOPSIS: There is nothing discreet about security in the village. From every vantage point guards can be seen -- ready and alert in case of trouble. The mammoth effort is to ensure they'll be no recurrence of the massacre at the 1972 Olympic games in Munich, when 11 Israeli athletes were killed by Arab guerrillas. As they check into the village officials and competitors are met by a formidable line-up of soldiers and policemen armed with metal detectors. Everyone has to go through three checkpoints and is subjected to triple screening. By the time the games start on the 17th of July, 10,000 people will have been searched.

Among the early arrivals were three Israeli officials whose refusal to be searched in front of news cameras caused a minor uproar. The three men were carrying bulky packages and their arrival hadn't been officially expected. After a brief discussion the group was whisked behind a wall in the validation tent and police turned newsmen away from the entrance. The Israelis underwent private security checks and it was later announced that the packages contained fencing and other sporting equipment. Afterwards newsmen were annoyed when they were banned from the validation tent.
