    OVER TEN THOUSAND VISITORS WATCHED AS THE AGEGE AGRICULTURAL SHOW WAS OPENED ON SATURDAY (18 FEBRUARY 1967) BY THE MILITARY GOVERNOR OF WESTERN NIGERIA, COLONEL ROBERT ADEBAYO. FROM HIM THEY HEARD THAT THE GOVERNMENT WAS TO GIVE AGRICULTURE GREATER PROMINENCE IN ITS NEXT DEVELOPMENT PERIOD.

    COLONEL ADEBAYO ANNOUNCED THAT A GRAIN STORAGE SCHEME HAD BEEN IN THE REGION. SILOS HAD BEEN BUILT WITH DRYING FACILITIES IN MAIZE GROWING AREAS TO PROVIDE EFFECTIVE DRYING AND STORAGE IN ORDER TO REDUCE WASTE. IT WOULD ALSO SPREAD OUT CONSUMPTION, ENSURING EVEN PRICES FOR THE CUSTOMER AND HIGHER RETURNS FOR THE FARMER.

    AGRICULTURE IN WESTERN NIGERIA IS BEING ENCOURAGED BY THE UNITED STATES AGENCY FOR INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND THE FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION OF THE UNITED NATIONS. WITH THE NEW INCREASE IN WORLD COCOA PRICES, COCOA FARMING IN WESTERN NIGERIA - THE AREA'S CHIEF MONEY-MAKER - HAS BEEN A NEW STIMULUS.

    AFTER HIS SPEECH COLONEL ADEBAYO WENT ON A 40 MINUTE TOUR OF THE VARIOUS STALLS TO SEE THE GOODS ON DISPLAY.
