  • Description

OXFORD UNIVERSITY WON THE 1965 BOAT RACE AGAINST CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY TODAY (SATURDAY). IT WAS ROWED ON THE RIVER THAMES BETWEEN THE LONDON SUBURBS OF PUTNEY AND MORTLAKE. LEADING ALMOST FROM THE START, MUCH-FANCIED OXFORD WON BY FOUR LENGTHS IN A GOOD TIME OF 18 MINUTES 07 SECONDS. THE COURSE COVERS FOUR MILES 374 YARDS 6.779 KMS).

ROWING IN WARM, SUMMER-LIKE CONDITIONS WITH THE BIGGEST CROWDS SEEN FOR YEARS LINING THE BANKS OF THE RIVER, THE OXFORD EIGHT -- WHICH INCLUDED FOUR AMERICANS -- HAD THE RACE WON ALMOST FROM THE START. AFTER CAMBRIDGE HAD TAKEN A SPRINTER'S LEAD, OXFORD OVERHAULED THEM IN THE FIRST MILE AND, TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THE LONG SURREY BEND, FORGED AHEAD AND WERE NEVER THREATENED.

THE WIN GAVE OXFORD ITS 49TH VICTORY SINCE THE EVENT BEGAN IN 1829, AGAINST CAMBRIDGE'S 61 VICTORIES; THERE HAS BEEN ONE DEAD HEAT.

(PRINCE CHARLES WATCHED THE RACE FROM A TELEVISION LAUNCH).
