Background: Skateboarding......and Britain has the first covered skatepark in Europe. It is in Hillingdon in Greater London, and was officially opened on Monday (6 March). The new skatepark is an indication of the tremendous popularity of skateboarding in Britain...It has become much more than a craze that could disappear as fast as it arrived. It is developing into a carefully organised sport, with its own National Skateboard Association.
SYNOPSIS: The new Hillingdon skatepark is within easy reach of all London's skateboard enthusiast.
It measures only 100 feet (30.4 metres) by 50 feet (15.2 metre), but it can take up to 200 skateboarders at a time. There is also plenty of room for spectators.
The park gives skateboarders an opportunity to develop their skills in ideal conditions. There is something for everyone as long as they are dressed properly. Safety is very much a keyword, and protective clothing is compulsory for all skateboarders.
There is plenty of variety at the park, including a 225 foot (68.5 metre) "snake", a long "half pipe" and two specially designed bowls.
One of the those putting the park through its paces at the opening was world champion racer Bobby Piercy from San Diego, California. He was just as excited about the new complex as were local skateboarders.
