Background: ALL EIGHT MEN FOUND GUILTY IN SOUTH AFRICA'S SABOTAGE TRIAL WERE SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT TODAY (FRIDAY).

NELSON MANDELA, 46-YEAR-OLD FORMER CHIEF OF THE BANNED AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS, AND THE OTHER SEVEN WERE FOUND GUILTY YESTERDAY OF SABOTAGE AND PLOTTING TO OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT.

THE JUDGE-PRESIDENT, MR. JUSTICE QUARTUS DE WET, YESTERDAY PRONOUNCED THE GUILT OF THE EIGHT MEN -- SIX AFRICANS, A WHITE ENGINEER AND AN INDIAN -- WHOM HE FOUND HAD PLANNED AND DIRECTED AN UNDERGROUND MOVEMENT TO PREPARE FOR A COUNTRY-WIDE REVOLT BY MEANS OF GUERILLA WARFARE, AN INVASION, AND WIDE-SPREAD SABOTAGE.

MANDELA WAS CONVICTED ON ALL FOUR COUNTS AGAINST HIM -- TWO OF SABOTAGE, ANOTHER OF ATTEMPTING TO FURTHER COMMUNISM AND A FINAL ONE OF SOLICITING, ACCEPTING, AND RECEIVING MONEY FROM BOTH INSIDE AND OUTSIDE SOUTH AFRICA TO ASSIST THE SABOTAGE PLAN.

WALTER SISULU, THE 52-YEAR-OLD FORMER SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS, DENNIS GOLBERG, A 33-YEAR-OLD WHITE ENGINEER, GOVAN MBEKI, A FORMER AFRICAN TEACHER AND JOURNALIST, RAYMON MAHLABA, 44-YEAR-OLD SON OF AN AFRICAN POLICEMAN, AND ELIAS MOTSOALEDI, A 39-YEAR-OLD TRADE UNIONIST, WERE ALL FOUND GUILTY OF SABOTAGE. ANDREW MLANGENI, A 38-YEAR-OLD AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS BRANCH SECRETARY WAS FOUND GUILTY ON ALL FOUR COUNTS. AHMED KATHRADA, THE SOLE INDIAN ACCUSED WHO WAS FORMERLY SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE TANSVAAL INDIAN CONGRESS, WAS ACQUITTED ON THREE CHARGES BUT FOUND GUILTY ON ONE OF THE SABOTAGE CHARGES.

A JOHANNESBURG ARCHITECT, LIONEL BERNSTEIN, WAS FOUND NOT GUILTY AND DISCHARGED, BUT WAS IMMEDIATELY RE-ARRESTED ON ANOTHER CHARGE.

UNIFORMED AND PLAIN CLOTHES POLICE FRINGED THE BAROQUE PALACE OF JUSTICE AS JUDGEMENT WAS DELIVERED.

A CROWD OF SOME 500 PEOPLE STOOD SILENTLY OUTSIDE THE COURT AS POLICE STOOD-BY READY TO QUELL DISTURBANCES. IN THE CROWD WERE MANDELA'S WIFE, WINNI, AND MRS. SISULU. MRS. MANDELA WAS ALLOWED INTO THE COURT. AFTER AND ARGUMENT WITH A POLICE OFFICER.

WHEN SHE CAME OUT SHE EXPLAINED TO THE AFRICANS WAITING OUTSIDE THAT THE SENTENCES WOULD BE ANNOUNCED TODAY.

WHEN THE CROWD HEARD THE VERDICT THEY RAISED THEIR FISTS -- THE SIGN OF THE AFRICAN NATIONAL CONGRESS PARTY -- AND CHANTED "AMANDLA NGA WETO" (STRENGTH IS OURS).

THE MRS. SISULU LED THE CROWD IN SINGING "NKOSI SIKELELE AFRICA", THE ANTHEM WHICH HAS BECOME ASSOCIATED WITH AFRICAN NATIONALISM.
