  • Description

THE FIRST ROAD TUNNEL UNDER THE ALPS WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), PROVIDING MOTORISTS WITH AN ALL-YEAR-ROUND MAIN HIGHWAY LINK BETWEEN NORTHERN AND SOUTHERN EUROPE.

IT RUNS UNDER THE 8,000 FOOT GREAT ST. BERNARD PASS, SLOPING GENTLY FROM THE VILLAGE OF BOURG ST. PIERRE ON THE SWILL SIDE TO RHEMY IN ITALY, NEARLY FOUR MILES AWAY.

THE OLD PASS, ONCE MANNED BY ROMAN GARRISONS, LATER CROSSED BY NAPOLEON'S ARMIES, IS CLOSED FOR AT LEAST FOUR MONTHS OF THE YEAR. THERE THE MONKS OF THE GREAT ST. BERNARD MONASTERY AND THEIR ST. BERNARD DOGS WON FAME FOR THEIR AID TO STRAINED TRAVELLERS.

THE WEATHER HOLDS FEW HAZARDS FOR THE MOTORIST USING THE TUNNEL. CONCRETE ROOFS PROTECT THE APPROACHES TO THE TUNNEL AND THE TRAFFIC FLOW IS ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED. THERE IS ONE LANE IN EACH DIRECTION AND OVERTAKING IS FORBIDDEN.

PRIVATELY BUILT AND OWNED BY A SWILL-ITALIAN COMPANY THE TUNNEL COST ABOUT 12,500,000 AND TOOK SIX YEARS TO COMPLETE. IT CAN HANDLE 500 CARS AN HOUR AND IT IS ESTIMATED THAT SOME 300,000 VEHICLES WILL USE THE TUNNEL EACH YEAR. MAXIMUM SPEED IS 60 KILOMETRES (35 MILES) AND HOUR. TOLLS RANGE FROM ABOUT SIX SHILLING AND NINEPENCE TO 10 SHILLING.

TO AVOID CONGESTION, ITALY AND SWITZERLAND HAVE COMBINED BORDER POSTS AT EACH END OF THE TUNNEL.

TODAY, THE FIRST DAY ON WHICH THE TUNNEL WAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, 1,400 VEHICLES PASSED THROUGH, INCLUDING A NEW BUS SERVICE RUNNING BETWEEN AOSTA, ITALY, AND MARTIONY, SWITZERLAND, THREE TIMES A DAY.
