  • Description

A 25-POUND (11 KILOGRAMME) TIME BOMB CAUSED A VIOLENT EXPLOSION IN A SINGAPORE OFFICE BLOCK YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY). THE BLAST KILLED TWO GIRL SECRETARIES AND INJURED 33 OTHER PEOPLE.

THE EXPLOSION WRECKED PART OF A BANK AND DAMAGED OFFICES OF THE AUSTRALIAN HIGH COMMISSION, IN THE SAME BLOCK. AUSTRALIAN AUTHORITIES BELIEVE THE BOMB WAS MEANT FOR THE HIGH COMMISSION. REPORTS SAY THEY ACCEPT THE THEORY THAT IT WAS PLANTED BY INDONESIAN AGENTS OR SYMPATHISERS.

THE AUSTRALIAN EXTERNAL AFFAIRS MINISTER, MR. PAUL HASLUCK, WAS UNDERSTOOD TO REGARD THE INCIDENT WITH EXTREME SERIOUSNESS AND WAS PERSONALLY EXAMINING ALL REPORTS FROM SINGAPORE.

THE TWO GIRLS DIED ON THE MEZZANINE FLOOR CRUSHED UNDER A PILE OF DEBRIS. SOME OF THE BANK'S BRITISH STAFF WERE GASHED BY FLYING GLASS, NONE SERIOUSLY. ONE OF THE SIX INJURED TAKEN TO HOSPITAL IS STILL DANGEROUSLY ILL.
