    THE 61-YEAR-OLD GENERAL, ONE OF THE MOST DECORATED SOLDIERS OF THE FRENCH ARMY WAS GREETED ON HIS ARRIVAL AT THE MINISTRY BY LIEUTENANT-GENERAL JOHANNES STEINHOFF WEST GERMANY'S AIR FORCE CHIEF OF STAFF.

    GENERAL MASSU WAS APPOINTED THE FRENCH RHINE ARMY COMMANDER IN 1966 AND WILL REMAIN ON THE ACTIVE LIST AND KEEP HIS PRESENT POST UNTIL JULY 31ST.

    HE WAS THE SUBJECT OF SPECULATION IN MAY LAST YEAR AFTER GENERAL DE GAULLE, AT THE HEIGHT ON INTERNAL UNREST IN FRANCE, FLEW SECRETLY TO WEST GERMANY TO TEST THE LOYALTY OF MASSU'S FORCES IF THEY WERE REQUIRED TO RESTORE ORDER IN FRANCE. HE RETURNED WITH MASSU'S ASSURANCE THAT THE FRENCH RHINE ARMY FORCE COULD BE DEPENDED UPON IF CALLED.
