    KING OLAV V OF NORWAY ARRIVED IN WASHINGTON YESTERDAY FOR A TWO DAY STATE VISIT. HE WAS WELCOMED AT THE WHITE HOUSE BY PRESIDENT JOHNSON.

    KING OLAV CAME TO WASHINGTON FROM WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA, WHERE HE HAD SPENT HIS FIRST NIGHT IN THE UNITED STATES. THE NORWEGIAN MONARCH WAS RECEIVED WITH FULL MILITARY HONOURS AT THE WHITE HOUSE. THE U.S. NAVY BAND PLAYED THE NATIONAL ANTHEMS OF NORWAY AND THE UNITED STATES WHILE A BATTERY OF GUNS FIRED A 21-GUN SALUTE. IN HIS WELCOMING SPEECH, PRESIDENT JOHNSON NOTED THAT THERE WERE MORE THAN 3-MILLION NORWEGIANS AND PEOPLE OF NORWEGIAN DESCENT IN THE UNITED STATES. THE PRESIDENT RECALLED THAT NORWAY WAS ONE OF THE FOUNDING MEMBERS OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC ALLIANCE AND SAID THERE WAS NO DOUBT THAT THE UNITED STATES WOULD REMAIN "CLOSELY BOUND TO ITS NORTH ATLANTIC PARTNERS."
