    OPERATION PORTSEA, INVOLVING AUSTRALIAN, AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES, CONTINUES IN AN AREA 40 MILES SOUTHEAST OF SAIGON.

    SINCE THE OPERATION BEGAN SOME WEEKS AGO, ALLIED TROOPS CAPTURED VIETCONG AND DOCUMENTS. THE TROOPS HAVE YIELDED A LARGE AMOUNT O VALUABLE INTELLIGENCE INFORMATION.

    BRIGADIER STUART GRAHAM, IS COMMANDING THE OPERATION. HE IS ALSO THE OFFICER COMMANDING AUSTRALIAN TASK FORCE IN VIETNAM.

    THE AMERICANS AND VIETNAMESE ARE UNDER THE COMMAND OF COLONEL COBB, OF THE 11TH ARMOURED CAVALRY UNIT AND COLONEL CHINH, OF THE 43RD VIETNAMESE REGIMENT, RESPECTIVELY.

    THE CAVALRY LOST ONLY ONE OF ITS VEHICLES WHICH RAN OVER A VIETCONG MINE.

    AUSTRALIAN AND AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE EXPERTS ARE SUPPORTING THE TROOPS WITH MASSIVE LEAFLET DROPS OVER THE AREA OF OPERATION.

    SO FAR, MORE THAN 3????-MILLION LEAFLETS HAVE BEEN DROPPED -- SOME ADVISING CIVILIANS TO PREPARE FOR EVACUATION AND OTHERS TO VIETCONG TROOPS URGING THEM TO DEFECT AND JOIN THE GOVERNMENT SIDE.

    THIS FLIGHT IS OVER DENSE JUNGLE WHERE THE 275TH VIETCONG REGIMENT IS BELIEVED TO BE HIDING AFTER A BATTLE AT LO GOM ON THE DAY THE OPERATION BEGAN. IN THIS BATTLE, 36 VIETCONG BODIES WERE RECOVERED BUT IT IS BELIEVED THAT AT LEAST ANOTHER 100 WERE KILLED OR WOUNDED.

    THE OPERATION IS AIMED AT RE-OPENING ROUTE 23, WHICH HAS BEEN CLOSED FOR MANY YEARS BECAUSE THE VIETCONG DESTROYED 14 BRIDGES AND BLEW UP LARGE SECTIONS OF ROADWAY, WHICH RUNS FOR 15 MILES.
