Background: Student unrest in Beirut again boiled over into a tense confrontation with Lebanese security forces on Thursday (25 April). Three thousand students started a march to the commercial district. But the security forces took immediate action, and tried to disperse the students with tear-gas, bringing up water cannon as an additional deterrent.
But the students retaliated by throwing stones. Several people were reported injured.
The students were protesting agaisnt action by the security forces the previous day, when they stormed the American University to end a six week student occupation. The original protest was over a ten-per-cent increase in tuition fees. But after the storming of the American University, students in several other colleges and schools went in strike in protest.
