    SIGNOR DANILO DOLCI, THE SICILIAN SOCIAL REFORMER, TODAY (FRIDAY) LED A DEPUTATION OF SICILIAN TOWN OFFICIALS TO PARLIAMENT BUILDINGS IN ROME. THE DEPUTATION CARRIED BANNERS CALLING FOR THE HASTENING OF WORK ON THE PROPOSED IRRIGATION DAM TO BE BUILT ON THE BELICE RIVER IN SICILY.

    SIGNOR DOLCI TOLD MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT THAT COMPLETION OF THE PROJECT WOULD MEAN IRRIGATION FOR 15,000 HECTARES (37,500 ACRES) OF LAND IN POVERTY-STRICKEN BELICE VALLEY.

    AMONG THOSE TAKING PART IN THE MARCH TO PARLIAMENT WAS MR. PETER MOULE. A PROMINENT MEMBER OF BRITAIN'S COMMITTEE OF ONE HUNDRED, AN ORGANISATION THAT PRESSES FOR WIDE RANGING SOCIAL REFORMS. HE HAS WORKED WITH SIGNOR DOLCI ON A NUMBER OF OCCASIONS.

    THE BUILDING OF THE DAM HAS BEEN UNDER DISCUSSION FOR A VERY LONG TIME - BUT SIGNOR DOLCI HAS EXPRESSED CONCERN AT THE DELAY IN BUILDING IT. HE HAS ORGANISED A "WEEK OF MOURNING" WHICH BEGAN LAST SUNDAY WITH A TWO-DAY FAST IN A TOWN SQUARE IN SICILY.

    SIGNOR DOLCI HAS SPENT MANY YEARS WORKING WITH THE PEOPLE OF THE BELICE VALLEY. HE HAS REPEATEDLY SPOKEN AGAINST THE FEUDAL CONDITIONS, AND URGED GOVERNMENT ASSISTANCE FOR FARMERS WORKING THE ARID, IMPOVERISHED SOIL THAT SURROUNDS IS VILLAGES IN THE VALLEY.

    (MEANWHILE IN PALERMO, SICILY, AN EARLY START ON THE BUILDING OF THE DAM IS EXPECTED AFTER AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT NEARLY 15 MILLION LIRE HAS BEEN ALLOCATED BY THE GOVERNMENT FOR TEST BORING AND EXCAVATIONS ATT HE PROPOSED SITE.)
