  • Description

Professor Carlo Schmid, Social Democratic candidate in the forthcoming West German election, to be held in West Berlin, July 1, was filmed at his Bonn office by Visnews, June 25.

Since 1949 Professor Schmid has been Vice-President of the Bundestag - West German Lower House. Before the last war, he lectured at Tubingen University, where from 1946 to 1953, he taught Public Law. Although Anti-Nazi, during the war he held appointments in occupied France, where he helped members of the French resistance movement, to escape the death penalty or forced labour.

As a leading member of the Social Democrats in post-war years he played an important part in drafting the Bonn Basic Law. A distinguished writer and poet, he is noted for his classical translations. He was born at Perpignan, France, in 1896, son of a German Scholar and a Frenchwoman.

After his election as candidate, Professor Schmid said it would be hard for the next Federal President to follow in the footsteps of Theodor Heuss. As an active politician standing for the Presidency - an office which would place him above all party politics - Professor Schmid has some misgivings. "I see a golden cage before me, and do not yet feel old enough for it" he announced recently. Candidate of the ruling Christian Democratic Party is Dr. Luebke, Minister of Agriculture.
