    WORK HAS BEGUN ON THE REPAINTING AND GENERAL OVERHAUL OF 10 SOVIET-BUILT FISHING TRAWLERS AT THE TEMA FISHING HARBOUR, NEAR ACCRA, IN PREPARATION FOR OFFERING THEM FOR SALE TO GHANAIAN FISHERMEN. THE TRAWLERS HAVE BEEN LYING IDLE IN THE HARBOUR FOR THE PAST 16 MONTHS, AND THEIR PROPOSED SALE IS PART OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION COUNCIL'S (NLC'S) SCHEME FOR STREAMLINING GHANA'S FISHING INDUSTRY.

    FISHING IS CONSIDERED BY IMPORTANT SECTOR OF GHANA'S ECONOMY AND APPEALS HAVE BEEN MADE BY THE NLC TO PRIVATE BUSINESSMEN TO ENTER THE FISHING INDUSTRY. PLANS ARE ALREADY IN PROGRESS WITH THE NORWEGIAN GOVERNMENT TO SET UP A TRAINING SCHOOL OF FISHERMEN IN GHANA. THE NLC HAS ALSO DECIDED TO SELL TO GHANAIAN FISHERMEN 12 SMALL AND MEDIUM SIZED FISHING BOATS ORDERED FROM YUGOSLAVIA.

    EACH OF THE 10 SOVIET-BUILT TRAWLERS IS ABOUT 180 FEET (54 METRES) LONG AND ABOUT 30 FEET (9 METRES) WIDE. EACH HAS A FULL-LOAD DISPLACEMENT OF 9,000 TONS AND A MAXIMUM SPEED OF 11.6 KNOTS. THE NLC IS ARRANGING WITH A FISHING ENGINEERING COMPANY TO BRING THE TRAWLERS INTO A SEAWORTHY CONDITION.
