Background: The Fulton aerial recovery system for retrieving personnel from inaccessible areas is being evaluated by the Special Air Warfare Center's 1st Combat Applications Group at Hurlburt Field, Florida (southeast USA) and a successful test with a live man was recently completed. The method uses a balloon with a line attached to the man on the ground, which is hooked by a plane to lift him out.

A big helium filled balloon is inflated and allowed to rise on the end of a nylon line. The end of the line is attached to a modified parachute harness sewn into coveralls worn by the man. The volunteer for the test was Captain Nelson J. Gough, 28 years old. The system had been previously tested with dummies.

A specially modified C-123 equipped with a gathering apparatus on the nose and flying at about 110 knots engages the line just below the balloon, locking it onto the aircraft, which pulls the man into the air. He is then reeled into the aircraft.

The Combat Applications Group conducted many tests with a life-size dummy before Captain Gough volunteered for the live trial.
