  • Description

Visnews filmed a new teletherapy unit for the treatment of Cancers at the Atomic Energy of Canada Limited, in Ottawa. The unit is a gamma emitter which uses Caesium 137 rays, which are focused onto any given point in the human body, destroying the cancers but sparing the healthy tissues surrounding them.

Caesium 137 is one of the group of isotopes known as fission products, resulting from the splitting, or fission of uranium atoms during operation of the nuclear reactor. Although the potential application of Caesium 137 in medicine and industry had been known for a number of years, complex chemical processing and handling problems have delayed its appearance in useful form until recently.

In the new teletherapy unit Caesium 137 is contained in a protective head, with a device to turn on a beam, the shape of which can be collimated to suit the tumour by adjustable beam-defining nozzles. The unit is remotely controlled from outside the treatment room.
