A demonstration in Nicosia against the Greek government was broken up by a pro-government group yesterday (21 April), the fourth anniversary of the military takeover in Greece. The demonstration was timed to coincide with a reception given by the Greek Ambassador to celebrate the takeover.
The anti-government demonstrators began their parade carrying banners proclaiming "Democracy in Greece", but almost immediately hundreds of pro-government forces attacked them, brandishing the Greek flag. They broke up the banners and fighting broke out. Strong detachments of police were on hand, but the crowd dispersed in peace.
SYNOPSIS: A demonstration in Nicosia last Wednesday against the Greek government clashed with young government supporters.
The demonstration was led by Dr. Vassos Lyssarides, the leader of the Democratic Union of the Centre Party in Cyprus... he's also personal physician to Archbishop Makarios. But he quickly withdrew from the balcony as jeering youths threw stones at him and hurled sticks.
Holding placards proclaiming "Democracy in Greece", Dr. Lyssarides led his group of protestors, towards the Greek Embassy. There, the Ambassador, Mr. Panayotakos, was due to hold a reception to celebrate the military takeover in Greece four years ago. But they didn't get very far. Their placards were torn from them by the government supporters and broken up. Although out of sight, strong detachments of police were there. But the crowd dispersed later in peace.
