  • Description

Indonesian troops were called out in Djakarta yesterday (Tuesday) to help police disperse students demonstrating against the government's new school fees policy.

The students took to the streets in defiance of an official ban for the second day running to protest against a new government ruling that families with schoolchildren contribute 12 percent of their income as school fees.

Despite police warnings, the students persisted in their demonstration. They chalked slogans over cars denouncing the Education Minister, Mr Mashuri, and describing the fees as 'crazy.'
However, when slogans were scrawled over a government vehicle, the police accompanied by troops acted. They fired shots in the air to disperse the mob.

Two students were arrested - one of them appearing most reluctant to get into a police Jeep. Later 200 students demonstrated outside police headquarters demanding their release.
