  • Description

Sir Francis Chichester the 70-year-old solo yachtsman who made his name sailing single-handed around the world, returned to Plymouth harbour on Monday morning (3 July) after retiring from the "Observer" Trans Atlantic Yacht Race through ill health. His son, Mr. Giles Chichester, was flown by Royal Navy helicopter to the frigate "Salisbury" on Friday and later transferred to the "Gipsy Moth"....Sir Francis's yacht....with three navy men to help sail it back to Plymouth. "Gipsy Moth" sailed into port unnoticed in thick fog early on Monday and Sir Francis was later transferred by launch to a naval hospital for a check-up. He's expected to stay there for at least a week. In an interview with BBC reporter Michael Whitmarsh, Mr. Giles Chichester said his father had been suffering from various illnesses for almost a year.
