  • Description

A small group of Spanish exiles, said to have been, inspired by Captain Galvao's daring capture of the "Santa Maria", were recently reported to have made an attempted seizure of Llivia - a tiny Spanish enclave in southern France.

Forces of the Spanish Civil Guard were sent to Llivia - only a few miles from the Franco-Spanish border - to Puigcerda and other frontier posts in the area. Reports from the Llivia Feb 22 however, indicated that life was normal. Official sources in Gerona denied that it had been seized.

A VISNEWS cameraman visited the town Feb 23 to investigate the rumours. Life seemed to be continuing in a normal way but the police were ever watchful. They asked him to hand over the film he had taken of Llivia. He obliged by giving them some film - but fortunately it was unexposed.

Further reports from Perpignan, France, said that Spanish police had detained Llivia's town clerk and transferred him to Gerona. The arrest followed two days of much activity by the police. Their normal force of 10 was reinforced by some thirty gendarmes.

There were also reports that police arrested two young Spaniards, caught distributing subversive propaganda.
