  • Description

As fighting continued on Cyprus, the United Nations' Security Council on thursday (15 August) adopted its fourth ceasefire resolution since July the 20th.

The call for a ceasefire and a resumption of peace talks was unanimous.

There were no individual sponsors of the resolution. All members of the 15-nation Security Council agreed to the text of the resolution during a day of intense private consultations.

In a later resolution, he council deplored the killing and wounding of U.N. troops in Cyprus and demanded that "all parties concerned" fully respect the international status of the peace keeping force.

Earlier, the U.N. Secretary-General Dr. Kurt Waldheim appealed to the security Council to act on the Cyprus crisis:
Following the vote, Britain rejected as "unrealistic and irrelevant" a new Soviet bid to have the Security Council send a mission of enquiry to Cyprus.

Soviet ambassador Jacob Malik revived the proposal, for the second time this week. He said the island was the victim of the plans of "a certain group in NATO" which,. in order to strengthen its military position in the Eastern Mediterranean, had dismembered Cyprus.

He said a mission chosen by the President of the Council - the office he himself holds this month - in consultation with other members should go to the island to obtain all facts of the situation.

British Ambassador Ivor Richard said the Soviet delegate's remarks were unrealistic and irrelevant. He added it was strange that the alleged principal plotters in the Cyprus drama, far from taking steps to get rid of the person they were supposed to have plotted against, had taken all measures to extract Archbishop Makarios from danger when violence first erupted on the island.
