  • Description

Two Soviet cosmonauts were among familiar surroundings when they visited "rocket city U.S.A." at the Marshall Space Flight Centre in Houston, Texas, yesterday (Thursday). Visiting spacemen, Vitali Sevastyanov and Andrian Nikolayev were guests at the american Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics meeting in Houston.

The visit is part of a 10-day U.S. tour by the two Russian spacemen who manned the record-setting 18-days Soyuz 9 orbital flight last june.

Escorted by Apollo II astronaut Edwin (Guzz) Aldrin, the cosmonauts today operated a N.A.S.A. "moon car" simulator. Then they spent almost an hour inside a full-scale model of the skylab space station, a project managed by the space centre that earlier led to the development of the Apollo-Saturn 5 moon rocket.

The two Soviet spacemen said Russia would try for longer endurance records before beginning to construct their orbiting space station.

The 41-year-old Nikolayev, a Soviet Air Force Major General, described the U.S. space as "great" and wished his American counterparts luck and success in their flights in 1972-73.
