  • Description

NEARLY 40-THOUSAND WORKERS IN BRITISH GUIANA WENT BACK TO WORK THIS WEEK... ENDING A GENERAL STRIKE THAT LASTED 80 DAYS... BUT THE STRIPE STILL GOES ON - THE LATEST VICTIM ANNOUNCED TODAY (SATURDAY) - A BRITISH SERVICEMAN MURDERED IN THE STREET. HE'S BEEN SERVING WITH THE GREEN JACKETS - TROOPS SENT THERE TO KEEP ORDER DURING THE STRIKE.

WHILE THE STRIKERS WENT BACK TO WORK, THE TROOPS ARE MAINTAINING CONSTANT PATROLS FOLLOWING A FORTNIGHT OF HIGH RACIAL TENSION INVOLVING CUTLASS FIGHTS, SHOOTING AND BOMB EXPLOSIONS. TEN HAVE DIED AND MORE THAN 200 HAVE BEEN HURT.

A BID TO FIND A SOLUTION TO THE POLITICAL CRISIS IS BEING MADE BY MR DUNCAN SANDYS, THE BRITISH COLONIAL SECRETARY, CURRENTLY TOURING THE COLONY.

BECAUSE OF THE STRIKE ALMOST NO CARGO HAD MOVED IN OR OUT OF THE PORT OF GEORGETOWN. ONLY A TRICKLE OF MAIL CAME THROUGH THE POST OFFICE. SUPPLIES OF FLOUR, SUGAR AND OTHER STAPLE FOODS ALMOST DISAPPEARED.
