  • Description

Ghana's new President Edward Akufo-Addo received foreign diplomats for the first time in his new office at the Castle, Osu, in Accra on Friday (4 September).

Among them was the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Ghana, Mr Tiecoura Alzoume of Niger, who read an address to the new President.

Ghana returned to civilian Government last October, but a three-man Presidential Commission acted as Head of State until it was dissolved on August 7.

Mr Akufo-Addo was sworn in as President on September 1st, after an election.

The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Mr Alzoume said Ghana had set a wonderful example with its return to civilian rule through a democratically elected Government.

He said that with Mr Akufo-Addo as president and Dr. Busia as Head of Government acting in co-operation with the many intelligent statesmen available in Ghana, the country could expect a happy future.

In reply, Mr Akufo-Addo noted the deep interest and understanding that members of the diplomatic corps have shown in the problems of the country.

He expressed his gratitude to the diplomats for the goodwill shown to him and to the Government and people of Ghana, on this, his first official meeting with them.
