  • Description

LOW CLOUD AND A STRONG EAST WIND TODAY (SATURDAY) PREVENTED THE ANGLO-FRENCH SUPERSONIC AIRLINER THE CONCORDE FROM MAKING ITS MAIDEN FLIGHT. TECHNICIANS AND PRESSMEN ARE WAITING AT TOULOUSE AIRPORT AND IN NEARBY HOTELS HOPING THAT THE WIND WILL CHANGE AND THE FLIGHT CAN TAKE PLACE TOMORROW.

THE EAST WIND WAS BLOWING RIGHT UP THE RUNWAY IN THE DIRECTION THAT CONCORDE WOULD HAVE TO TAKE OFF -- IT WOULD HAVE GIVEN A TALL WIND TOO DANGEROUS FORA MAIDEN FLIGHT. IN ADDITION THE TEST PILOT DOES NOT WANT TO TAKE CONCORDE UP WITH A CLOUD CEILING OF UNDER TEN THOUSAND FEET.

OFFICIALS OF SUD AVIATION, JOINT MAKERS OF THE AIRCRAFT WITH THE BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORPORATION SAY THAT THE BEST TIME TO TRY THE FLIGHT TOMORROW WILL BE BETWEEN 9 AND 10 A.M. GMT. THE FLIGHT SHOULD LAST FOR ABOUT 35 TO 40 MINUTES. IT IS HOPED TO GET IT OVER BEFORE THE EAST WIND RETURNS, WHICH METEOROLOGISTS EXPECT ABOUT MIDDAY. TODAY WAS THE SECOND DAY RUNNING THAT THE FLIGHT HAD BEEN CANCELLED BECAUSE OF ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS.

IT IS ALREADY OVER A YEAR AFTER THE DATE ORIGINALLY SET FOR THE FIRST CONCORDE TEST FLIGHT.
