  • Description

THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE IN HONG KONG DEFIED A BAN ON PUBLIC GATHERINGS AND FIREWORKS DISPLAYS IN THE COLONY YESTERDAY (SUNDAY) TO CELEBRATE THE 18TH NATIONAL DAY OF THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA. ONE MAN WAS KILLED AND ABOUT 80 INJURED CLASHES BETWEEN LEFTIST CELEBRATORS AND POLICE FORCES.

THE NATIONAL DAY BEGAN PEACABLY, ALTHOUGH GIANT PORTRAITS OF CHAIRMAN MAO TSE TUNG AND CHINESE FLAGS ADORNED COMMUNIST BUILDINGS THROUGHOUT HONG KONG. BUT LATER LARGE CROWDS GATHERED WHEN ABOUT 10 CHINESE JUNKS GATHERED IN THE HARBOUR AND SENT ALOFT A SERIES OF EXPLODING FIREWORKS.

SOME 250 POLICE RUSHED TO THE WATERFRONT DISTRICT TO CONTROL THE CROWD THAT HAD FORMED, AND WERE MET BY A HAIL OF EMPTY BOTTLES AND STONES.

AFTER FAILING TO DISPERSE THE CROWD WITH TEAR GAS AND WOODEN PROJECTILES THE POLICE OPENED FIRE WITH CARBINES AND REVOLVERS.

ELSEWHERE IN HONG KONG THE POLICE PATROLLED STREETS THAT WERE NOTICEABLY NON-VIOLENT.

THROUGHOUT THE LATE AFTERNOON GUESTS CAME AND WENT FROM A SERIES OF RECEPTIONS IN THE BARRICADED BANK OF CHINA. COMMUNIST STORES SCREENED SPECIAL FILMS TO MARK THE ANNIVERSARY.

CHINA RESUMED THE SUPPLY OF WATER TO HONG KONG YESTERDAY, ACCORDING TO CONTRACT. THIS ENDED THE THREE MONTHS WATER SHORTAGE BROUGHT ON BY A FAILURE OF THE SUMMER RAINS.
