Background: A partial exchange of prisoners between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots will start early next week. The move followed a meeting between the Greek Cypriot President Glafkos Clerides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Kenktash in Nicosia on Friday (13 September).

A United Nations spokesman said the first prisoner exchange would begin on Monday. It's believed several hundred people will be involved.

The meeting between the two leaders was held in the Ledra Palace Hotel under the auspices of the United Nations. The two men met for nearly two hours to discuss the prisoner exchange, then they held private discussions for another 45 minutes. The only other person present at the second meeting was a senior officer of the United Nations. It's believed the main topics were refugee problems and political issues.

The United Nations spokesman said the meeting was held in a constructive atmosphere. He declined to say whether the two men had discussed a Red Cross scheme for the release of all of the more than five thousand prisoners and civilians held by both sides.
