    ABOUT 500 POLICEMEN YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) BLOCKED OFF STREETS SURROUNDING THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN ROME IN AN EFFORT TO PREVENT DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE SOVIET ENTRY INTO CZECHOSLOVAKIA.

    MORE THAN 200 STUDENTS, IN SEPARATE GROUPS OF NEO-FASCISTS, SOCIALISTS AND RADICALS, MILLED AROUND OUTSIDE THE FORBIDDEN ZONE FOR 90 MINUTES. THE STUDENTS SHOUTED ABUSE AT THE SOVIETS AND VOICED THEIR SUPPORT FOR THE CZECHOSLOVAK LEADERS. THEY CARRIED BANNERS IN ITALIAN, ENGLISH AND CZECH PROCLAIMING "LONG LIVE DUBCEK" AND "MOSCOW AND ATHENS ARE THE SAME."
    THERE WERE NO CLASHES DURING THE DEMONSTRATION, DURING WHICH THE STUDENT STAGED A SIT-DOWN PROTEST ON THE PAVEMENTS.

    EARLIER THAT DAY, A GROUP OF LEFT-WING YOUTHS AND GIRLS HURLED EGGS AT THE EMBASSY IN ANOTHER ANTI-SOVIET PROTEST.

    POLICE TOOK EXCEPTIONAL PRECAUTIONS TO AVOID ANY ATTACK ON THE EMBASSY. THERE HAVE BEEN THREE BOMB AND SHOOTING INCIDENTS AT SOVIET BUILDINGS IN ITALY DURING THE LAST TWO MONTHS.

    THAT NIGHT, ITALIAN PRIME MINISTER GIOVANNI LEONE EXPRESSED THE COUNTRY'S "INDIGNATION" AT THE SOVIET INTERVENTION IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA DURING A MEETING WITH THE SOVIET AMBASSADOR, MR. MIKITA RYJOV.
