  • Description

Italy faced the prospect of being without state medical aid until shortly before Christmas as 200,000 health and welfare workers on Tuesday (7 December) continued to strike.

Thousands of hospital staff took to the streets to begin a protracted programme on short stoppages in protests against what they considered the country's chaotic medical situation and delays in promised health reforms.

Rome traffic was paralysed for several hours during the demonstrations. At the same time, the Italian cabinet was studying a draft law which will phase out the current complex system of health insurance and institute a national health service by 1973.

Meanwhile, an estimated 40 million Italians are being deprived of state medical aid.
