    THE PEOPLE OF AGBOWA-IKOSI IN WESTERN NIGERIA THIS NEW YEAR ARE CELEBRATING THE FESTIVAL OF AGBO, A FESTIVAL HELD ONLY ONCE EVERY FIVE YEARS.
    THE FESTIVAL CONSISTS OF THREE DAYS OF MERRYMAKING, GAY CELEBRATION, MUSIC AND FRIENDLY COMPETITION.
    THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE FIESTA, WHICH COINCIDES WITH CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS, IS A MASQUERADE DANCE. VILLAGERS BELIEVE THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS DANCE ENHANCES THE PROSPERITY OF THE TOWN.
    THE MASQUERADE ALSO PROVIDES THE FRIENDLY RIVALRY THE VILLAGE IS DIVIDED IN THREE TEAMS AND THEY COMPETE FOR THE BEST COSTUMES.
    SINGING AND DANCING GO ON INTO THE NIGHT. AGBO IS A TIME WHEN MANY VILLAGERS LIVING IN OTHER DISTRICTS RETURN HOME TO BE RE-UNITED WITH FAMILIES AND FRIENDS.
