  • Description

The Chanaian Head of State, Colonel Ignatius Acheampong, on Monday (13 January) reviewed a spectacular military parade in Accra, marking the third anniversary of rule by the National Redemption Council. The military-based council took control of the country after the Progressive Party Government of Dr. Kofi Busia was deposed in a bloodless coup.

The parade, watched by thousands of wildly cheering people, was held in Accra's Independence Square. On the ground, Army, Navy, support services and border guards showed off their military might. And in the air, squadrons of Ghanaian Air Force aircraft -- including helicopters -- flew past as the Colonel took the salute.

The celebrations in Independence Square were followed by a march through the principal streets of the capital. There were parades in Ghana's main centres, where the salutes were taken by the Regional Commissioners.

At the Accra parade, Colonel Acheampong addressed the crowd and revealed that attempts to undermine the armed forces had been discovered last year....and thwarted. He spoke of the problem of inflation which faces the country in the years to come.
