  • Description

Campaigning for Argentina's Presidential election on March the 11th has stepped up with the first mass rally to be held in the capital, Buenos Aires. More than 40-thousand people gathered in a football stadium on Thursday (15 Feb) to see and hear the Peronist Front's candidate, Senor Hector Campora. The big turnout gave a boost to Peronist hopes.

The Peronist Front is made up of 11 parties. Campora was hand picked by former President Juan Peron to contest the election.

When the campaign began several weeks ago, just after Peron had paid a brief visit to the country, Campora was not considered likely to win. Now, with bigger and bigger crowds, he has come into the reckoning.

Of the nine presidential candidates, Campora and radical candidate, Dr. Ricardo Balbin, are expected to gain the biggest votes.

One obstacle which the Peronist Front has to face is legal action started by the Government over one of their slogans: "Campora in Government; Peron in Power". The government says this violates an article of the Constitution which says the people can govern only through their elected representatives. The action is seen as a challenge to the legality of the Front's candidacy.
