    A FESTIVAL DATING BACK TO THE YEAR 1154 WAS CELEBRATED YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) IN THE ITALIAN TOWN OF GUBBIO, IN THE ROMAN APPENINES SOUTH-EAST OF FLORENCE. THE FESTIVAL - KNOWN LOCALLY AS THE "FESTA DEI CERI" - WAS IN HONOUR OF ST. UBALDO, GUBBIO'S PATRON SAINT. UBALDO WAS BISHOP OF GUBBIO IN 1154 WHEN THE TOWNFOLK SCORED A NOTABLE WAR VICTORY AGAINST 11 OTHER TOWNS.

    THE PICTURESQUE CEREMONY BEGAN YESTERDAY MORNING IN THE TOWN'S MAIN SQUARE WITH THE TRADITIONAL THROWING OF WATER PITCHERS. AFTERWARDS, THREE LARGE WOODEN TOWERS WERE RAISED. ON TOP OF THEM WERE STATUES OF ST. UBALDO, ST. GEORGE AND ST. ANTHONY. EACH STATUE WEIGHS 4 1/2 HUNDREDWEIGHT (227 KILOGRAMS), AND, OF COURSE, SEVERAL PEOPLE WERE NEEDED TO CARRY THEM.

    THE CARRIERS, DRESSED IN THE CUSTOMARY COSTUME, THEN RAN THROUGH EVERY STREET IN THE TOWN. HOLDING THE TOWERS ALOFT, THEY RETURNED TO THE MAIN SQUARE AND CIRCLED IT THREE TIMES. THEN IT WAS TIME FOR FURTHER CELEBRATIONS, SUCH AS EATING, DRINKING AND DANCING.
