Background: Mr. Robert McNamara, President of the World Bank, visited Togo on January 10 for two days or talks at the invitation of General Etienne Eyadema, the Togolese Head of State.
In a communique, Mr. McNamara said that since Togo joined the Bank in 1962 there had been continual discussions on development programmes. The bank was now considering a second project for road building, following the success of an earlier venture, as well as work on agriculture and irrigation.
SYNOPSIS: Top Togolese officials have recently held talks with Mr. Robert McNamara, president of the World Bank. His visit is expected to lead to further aid for Togo, following the success of a road-building project.
Mr. McNamara visited Togo at the special invitation of President Etienne Eyadema, who later took him on a tour of cocoa and coffee producing areas in the centre of the country.
Mr. McNamara revealed that the World Bank hopes to finance agricultural and irrigation developments in Togo, as well as further transport projects.
