  • Description

A 31-year old shop owner, Michael Stefas, charged with killing Greek Liberal politician Alexandros Panagoulis, spoke to newsmen in Athens on Saturday (15 May).

Panagoulis, who became an anti-junta resistance hero when he tried to assassinate the dictator, George Papadopoulos in 1968, died in a car crash earlier this month on the same Athens coastal road where the assassination attempt took place.

Mr. Stefas stepped forward two days after the crash and said he was involved. He said Panagoulis's car skidded on the wet road, bumped into his own car and smashed against a wall.

Stefas was later charged with homicide by negligence and with violating traffic regulations, including abandoning his victim and using false licence plates.

Panagoulis's family and some opposition leaders believe that Panagoulis was murdered, but the charges indicate that the prosecution excludes that possibility.

Several newspapers have claimed that Panagoulis died because he was in possession of archives kept by the feared military police under the former regime.
