  • Description

Over a million Danes are members of the enterprising private organization - "Zonen" - which, for a subscription of only 9 shilling a year, undertakes to fly sick Danish travellers home for hospital treatment from any corner of the globe.

"Zonen" was inaugurated in 1939 and soon had six specially constructed aircraft ready to fly off anywhere in response to an emergency call. Before the organization started many people died on small islands around Denmark as slow transport arrangements made it impossible to get patients to mainland hospitals in time.

Today, "Zonen" has 20 small modern aircraft based all over Denmark - some built to accommodate 3 or 4 passengers, others will take one stretcher-case. Recently Dane was taken ill in rome and contracted "Zonen". Next day he was being treated in his home-town hospital after a rapid rescue flight. Romans thought he must be very affluent after his priority treatment - in fact he was a Jutland farmer.

During the last days of the war this aircraft medical service paid many mercy trips to Germany to bring back Danish and Norwegian prisoners-of-war from German camps.

Comparable to the famous Alaskan bush-pilots, "Zonen" planes are able to make landings anywhere - no matter how bad the conditions.
