Background: Iranian Prime Minister, Amir Abbas Hoveyda, took time off form a busy round of engagements in Paris on Wednesday (26 May) to visit the Metro -- the city's famous underground railway network.

Mr. Hoveyda arrived in Paris on Monday (24 May) on a five day visit. He had assured French President Valery Giscard D'Estaing that his country "means business" in associating France with Iran's industrial development.

After the first day of talks Mr. Hoveyda announced that his country had signed contracts to buy two nuclear power plants from France. They will be built under licence in France and the contracts are worth 5,000 million frances (1,200 million US dollars). Mr. Hoveyda's interest in the Paris underground railway was heightened because a similar system is being built in Iran's capital, Teheran. France is also helping Iran with the construction of a large section of motorway and the electrification of the existing railway.

Before leaving France on Friday (28 May) Mr. Hoveyda will discuss plans for a state visit to Iran by President Giscard D'Estaing.
