Background: It was finals day for the mens doubles teams at the French Open Tennis Championships in Paris on Friday (3 June). American Brian Gottfried and Raul Ramirez of Mexico met Poland's Wotjek Fibak and the Czech player, Jan Kodes. And it proved to be a bad day for the Europeans once again. Gottfried and Ramirez took the title for the second time in three years with a 7-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win over the two East Europeans.

SYNOPSIS: Fibak -- seen serving here -- and Kodes played well in the first set and at one stage were leading 6-5. Fibak put the pressure on with his strong volleying. but then Ramirez and gottfried pulled back to 6-6. Then it was Kodes who began putting the pressure on the tall Mexican forcing him to misplace his returns.

Kodes and Fibak eventually lost the first set but then came back to take the second 6-4.

It was not long though before the tables were turned once again. The American and Mexican took the third set and began to play as they had done to win last year's mens doubles title at Wimbledon. gottfried and Ramirez were playing in their third successive French doubles final and have been Italian champions four times.

Gottfried serving for the fourth set and the match. And it was an out of court return by Kodes that finally decided it. With yet another doubles title to add to their record, Ramirez and gottfried will be looking to the French singles where they have both reached the semi-finals
