  • Description

While the first round of the World Cup Golf championship in Buenos Aires opened yesterday (Thursday) with a team tussle between Argentina and the United States, the little fancied Australian pair, David Graham and Bruce Devlin took an early three stoke lead.

Roberto de Vicenzo, the Argentine veteran, opened his team contest with a brilliant eight under par 64 at the Jockey Club course. His partner, Vicente Fernandez, had a first round of 70. The Australian pair had a first round of 65 (Graham) and 66 for Devlin.

The United States are present holders of the world trophy, but they seem unlikely to retain it this year. Lee Trevino had a middling first round of 70 followed up today (Friday) with a 73 -- one over par. With a team aggregate of 283, Trevino and his partner, Dave Stockton (67 and 73) are seventeen strokes behind the Australians. England (Tony Jacklin and P. Butler) have a two-round aggregate of 287.

Forty-three two man nation teams are competing for the World Cup title.
