Background: President Varahgiri Venkata Giri of India arrived in Dacca, the capital of Bangladesh, on Saturday (15 June) for a five-day goodwill visit.
He was welcomed at Dacca airport by Bangladesh's President Mohammadullah and Prime Minister Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. He was also accorded a 21-gun salute and a guard of honour representing all three of the country's armed forces.
The following day, President Giri laid floral wreaths at the tomb in Dacca of the people killed during the war of independence from Pakistan in 1971.
Later, President Giri spoke of relations between the two countries. He called for closer links between them in areas ranging form commerce to education to build up their strength "not in military terms, but to give each one of our nations a richer life".
President Giri is 79 and has held office since 1969. His visit to Bangladesh returns the visit to New Delhi in mid-May by Sheikh Mujib. During this visit, agreement was reached between the two countries on joint action to raise the world price of jute and on sharing the waters of the Ganges from the Farakka Dam project in West Bengal.
