    On the opening day of the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Milan on Saturday (11 March) the strong East European track and field teams dominated the honours list -- but other countries -- both East and West European -- picked up some medals along the way.

    SYNOPSIS: The first track gold medal of the championships went to Johanna Klier of East Germany for the women's 60 metres hurdles.

    Klier's time of 7.94 seconds was the fastest in the world this season. Poland's Grazyna Rabsztyn was second.

    In the pole vault Victor Trofimenko of the Soviet Union took the silver medal. The gold went to the Polish Olympic champion Tadeusz Slusarski with a leap of 5.45 metres (17 feet 10???? inches)
    In the men's 60 metres, the gold went to Nikolia Kolesnikov of the Soviet Union. The nearest West Europeans came in fifth and sixth.

    It was the turn of the Czechs to take the title in the women's long jump. Jarmila Nygrynova took the gold with a personal best of 6.62 metres (21 feet 8 inches)
    To the delight of the home crowd, Italy's Sara Simeoni joint holder of the world record in the woman's high jump set a championship record with a leap of 1.94 metres (6 ft 5 inches)
