    Moslems throughout Nigeria offered prayers to mark the annual festival of Eid el-Kabir on Saturday (4 December).

    SYNOPSIS: The festival is one of the great events of the Moslem yea and it coincides with the prayers of those who are currently on the hold pilgrimage to Mecca.

    The celebration also symbolises the sacrificial offering y Abraham of his son, Isaac, and during the three days, each Moslem family sacrifices a sheep. But this year the festival was quieter than normal in the city of Zaria. There were none of the usual displays by horsemen, dancers and singers.

    The Military Governor of Kaduna state, Group Captain Usman Jibrin, was among the military leaders to send greetings to the worshippers. In his message he urged them to make local government reforms a success. He said recent local elections were the start of moves to ensure that every Nigerian participates in the development of his country.
